Male factor Infertility

Infertility in a couple can be from the female or male. Sometimes it is caused by both sides, and sometimes we just cannot find the cause at all. For causes of the male, we can find out by examining the quality of sperm. We have to see whether the man’s sperm is of good enough quality to get his wife pregnant. We can tell the quality of sperm by the quantity, PH balance, concentration, motility, morphology, and DNA fragmentation index (DFI). The World Health Organization has set the parameters of quality for normal sperm.

The causes of poor-quality sperm can include an unhealthy lifestyle like working too hard, high stress, lack of rest and sleep, lack of exercise, bad diet, excessive consumption of tea, coffee, cigarettes or alcohol, etc.

Apart from changing your lifestyle and diet, you can also take vitamins and supplements like krill oil, Astaxanthin, zinc, L-Carnitine, and oxy-inositol to improve your sperm quality. When the quality is increased to a certain level, we can perform an Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) to achieve pregnancy. However, if we cannot get that level of improvement, we can also try Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) to get a baby as well.
